Suicide Prevention

Suicide is not only about the tragic loss of life, but also it can be devastating to a family or a community. The Colorado Council of Churches is partnering with the Carson J Spencer Foundation and the Second Wind Fund to provide a free 45 minute webinar for clergy and congregational education directors. The webinar “Faith Community Leaders’ Role in Suicide Prevention: What You Need to Know to Be Active in Intervention/Prevention.” Without leaving your office, through your computer screen and telephone you can invest 45 minutes in becoming prepared to recognize “sign” and knowing what to do and where to find the needed resources. The webinar will be from 10:00am to 10:45 on Thursday, February 23, 2012. To register, click on the Upcoming Events post on the Home page.

Colorado Interfaith Roundtable

Over 40 faith-inspired direct-service or advocacy organizations gather on a quarterly basis for networking, sharing and discussion of important issues facing and affecting the people of Colorado. Although the group as a whole, known as the Colorado Interfaith Roundtable, will not take positions, organizations within the Roundtable are free to create partnerships to collaborate on any issue/effort. The Colorado Council of Churches took leadership in calling the Colorado Interfaith Roundtable into existence.

Public Education

Enable every Colorado student – preschool through post-secondary education, and regardless of socio-economic status, ethnicity, or zip code – to learn to high standards, to become well-rounded, life-long learners and citizens and to develop the skills necessary to compete in the 21st century workforce. That is one of the principles around which over 20 organizations have organized to support public education as a priority in Colorado. Partnership with MOP

The Colorado Council of Churches has entered into a partnership with Metro Organizations for People (MOP) for the purpose building the public will, within the faith community, to enhance access for health care for all Coloradans. This partnership is made possible by a three year grant funded by The Colorado Trust (www.coloradotrust.org.) Becky Miller Updike will coordinate this effort for CCC. Some of CCC’s responsibilities and contributions to this effort are:

Communication and strategic collaboration with denominational leaders to educate and influence congregations and policy makers, specifically identifying 2-4 clergy in each of seven regions across the state who will consider working directly with CCC, MOP and PICO CAN around building the public will for access to health, effectively using their leadership to educate and engage a minimum of 200-400 people per region.
Outreach to the 900+ congregations represented by CCC state-wide and other strategic partner groups with whom CCC has established relationships via mailings, newsletters, on-line educational materials; will include public will building messages in quarterly mailings to all congregations and quarterly newsletters to all denominational leaders, as well as in downloadable DVDs developed by either CCC or MOP for use in classes and forums and website updates.
Supply resources and develop trainings around how and why communities of faith can and should engage in the health policy dialogue, as well as curriculum resources to study aspects of health, health reform and immigration from a faith perspective as part of public will building campaign for all Coloradans to have access to health.
Produce website updates, articles and online newsletters to support public will-building efforts.
Conduct presentations by staff and faith leaders affiliated with CCC: minimum of 15 per year.
lnitiate and engage strategic partnerships and dialogue with the CCC denominational leaders and also throughout the Colorado interfaith community.
Provide support, as appropriate, for events and projects undertaken by MOP and PICO CAN to fulfill public will-building grant commitments.
